Former Liverpool defender Avi Cohen has been seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Israel.
Cohen, 54, suffered severe head injuries after his bike collided with a car. He was treated at the scene of the accident by paramedics before being taken to Tel Aviv’s Ichilov hospital, where he underwent five hours of surgery. His condition is said to be critical.
Father of Bolton midfielder Tamir, Cohen was the first Israeli to play in England, joining Liverpool in 1979 from Maccabi Tel Aviv, and making 24 appearances.
He memorably scored his only Reds goal against Aston Villa, but netted an own-goal in the same match.
Cohen also had a stint with Rangers and won 64 caps for Israel.
A statement on Liverpool’s website read: ‘Liverpool FC would like to extend their best wishes to Avi Cohen.’
It continued: ‘The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Avi and his family at this difficult time and we wish him a speedy recovery.’
