Liverpool need a couple of big name signings in the summer says Dirk Kuyt. The Dutchman believes the Reds will need to add a couple of top class players to their ranks this Summer if they are qualify for the Champions League again. “If we can buy a few more players, I think we will be really close to winning trophies again,” said Kuyt. “There were times this season when we didn’t play well and conceded last minute goals but we were also really unlucky, when you think of the beach ball and the injuries we had. “Fernando was a huge miss in particular. Last season, it was the opposite and we were the ones scoring the last minute goals. Everything was going our way then. “We just need a little bit more luck and a bit more quality in the team. Everyone knows that. In the meantime, everyone who is here needs to work really hard to improve.”

Dirk Kuyt 300
DIRK KUYT today claimed a fruitful summer in the transfer market will provide Liverpool with the ammunition to instantly reclaim their Champions League status.
The Reds’ forward – who, along with team-mate Ryan Babel, has been selected for Holland’s World Cup squad – is anxious to put the disappointments of the season just gone behind him as quick as possible.
But while he readily accepts that Rafa Benitez’s side under-achieved, he does not believe major surgery is required during the coming months for Liverpool to re-establish themselves in the Premier League’s higher echelon.
So long as Liverpool can hang on to Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, Kuyt is confident that the right players will arrive on Merseyside before August to make a difference in the new campaign.
‘If we can buy a few more players, I think we will be really close to winning trophies again,’ said Kuyt.
‘There were times this season when we didn’t play well and conceded last minute goals but we were also really unlucky, when you think of the beach ball and the injuries we had.
‘Fernando was a huge miss in particular. Last season, it was the opposite and we were the ones scoring the last minute goals. Everything was going our way then.

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson has made his first signing by bringing in goalkeeper David Martin on a three-year deal from Liverpool.
The goalkeeper, who spent time on loan at Tranmere, Leeds and Derby this season, will return to the club where he began his career when his contract at Anfield expires on July 1.
After making his first signing since becoming the Dons’ manager on a 12-month rolling contract, Robinson told the club’s official website: “Since I met David during my time with Liverpool, he’s been a player I’ve admired. He left this club as a boy but he’s come back a man and I think he has all the qualities to be a future England goalkeeper.
“We want players at this football club that match our ambition, are passionate about playing for MK Dons and hungry for success. David certainly fits into all of those categories.”
Martin added: “It’s a dream come true to be back here and I’m grateful to the manager and the chairman for giving me the opportunity. The club’s made incredible progress in the four-and-a-half years I’ve been away and, after meeting Karl Robinson, I was really impressed with how he wants to take it forward.
“I’ve had the chance to work with some fantastic players at Liverpool and I’m looking forward to coming back and showing the fans here how much I’ve improved as a player.”

Chinese internet gaming tycoon Zhu Jun has refused to deny claims he is interested in buying Liverpool.
Reports have claimed that Zhu, chairman of Nasdaq-listed online game company The9 Limited, has held provisional talks about purchasing the Premier League club.
Zhu, who already owns Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua, is said to have met with Barclays Capital, the investment bank hired to handle the sale of the Reds, in Hong Kong in late April and more recently in Shanghai.
Officials at Shanghai-based The9 would not confirm the talks had taken place, with company spokeswoman Phyllis Sai saying: “So far we have no comment on this.”
Zhou Liang, Zhu’s assistant, also gave an enigmatic response about whether the 44-year-old had held discussions with Liverpool about making a bid for the 18-time league champions.
“I cannot tell you any information at this moment,” Zhou added.
“(The report) was information from the English side. Information moves very fast but there are some entities that need vehicles to travel. As soon as they arrive in China, we will let you know.”

Liverpool have been linked with Ever Banega. Rafael Benitez is apparently preparing an £8m move for the Valencia midfielder who is described in some quarters as the new Xabi Alonso. So no pressure there then. The transfer could be funded by the selling of Alberto Aquilani, although there is now way Benitez will recoup the £20m he spent on the Italian.

Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina offered no excuses after reflecting on a “hell of a year” at the club.

A seventh-place finish was the Reds’ worst performance in the Barclays Premier League since 1999, compounding early exits from the Champions League and FA Cup earlier in the campaign. Reina was one of few to come out of the campaign with credit and that was recognised with him being overwhelmingly voted the club’s player of the season.

“I feel a bit mixed because when a goalkeeper wins this kind of award, it’s never a good thing,” said Reina, who also won his fourth golden glove for the most clean sheets, sharing it this season with Chelsea’s Petr Cech.

“I am happy with the things I have done, but not one of us can be happy because of the season we’ve had.

“No matter what you do, it’s about the team. All of us are really disappointed.

“It’s been a hell of a year with injuries. Fernando (Torres), Stevie (Gerrard), Glen (Johnson), the centre-backs – we’ve been in a lot of trouble with injuries, so it’s always difficult to prepare for a season like that.

“But it’s no excuse – we should have done better and we didn’t.”

Co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s decision to officially put the club up for sale has added to the uncertainty at Anfield, with the futures of manager Rafael Benitez, Torres and Gerrard all being speculated about. Reina has called for a swift conclusion to give Benitez a chance to plan properly for next season.

“It is vital [there is a quick sale],” said the Spain international. “It would be simple as it would mean we could start planning for next season earlier.

“We [the players] worry. It is a little bit of a concern and we need to sort out these kind of things, like the sale of the club and the thing with the owners. Once we settle all this then we can begin to look forward and improve the squad.”
